What Is a Sleep Score?
A sleep score is a quantified, composite metric — typically expressed as a number between 0 and 100 — that translates multiple dimensions of your sleep quality into a single actionable number. Unlike simply tracking hours slept, a sleep score considers the full complexity of restorative sleep: how efficiently your body uses the time in bed, how quickly you fall asleep, how much you wake during the night, and how refreshed you feel upon waking.
The concept emerged from clinical sleep medicine, where decades of polysomnography (PSG) research demonstrated that sleep duration alone is a poor predictor of daytime functioning. How Sleep Scores Are Calculated: The 5 Components

Sleep Efficiency (30% weight)
(Total Sleep Time ÷ Time in Bed) × 100. The AASM defines healthy efficiency as 85%+. Below 80% is clinically significant. This receives the highest weighting because research shows it predicts next-day cognitive performance better than duration alone.
Sleep Duration (25% weight)
AASM recommends 7–9 hours for adults 18–64. Our algorithm scores 7.5 hours as optimal, with progressive penalties below 7 hours and above 9 hours.
Sleep Onset Latency (20% weight)
Time to fall asleep. Normal is 10–20 minutes. Under 5 minutes suggests sleep deprivation. Over 30 minutes is the primary criterion for sleep-onset insomnia.
WASO — Night Wakings (15% weight)
Wake After Sleep Onset. Healthy: under 20 minutes. Over 30 minutes indicates fragmented sleep architecture and disproportionately disrupts REM sleep.
Subjective Quality (10% weight)
Self-rated morning refreshment (1–5 scale). Captures sleep architecture dimensions — deep sleep proportion, micro-arousal frequency — that objective metrics miss.

85–100: Excellent
Top-tier sleep quality. Correlates with optimal cognitive performance, strong immune function, and emotional resilience.
70–84: Good
Above-average sleep that supports daily functioning. One or two components are likely pulling the average below excellent.
55–69: Needs Improvement
Below the clinical healthy threshold. Noticeable consequences likely: brain fog, mood variability, caffeine dependence, reduced concentration.
40–54: Poor
